Income Information

Total SS benefits received this year (before any Medicare premium deductions). From SSA-1099 Box 5.
Taxable traditional IRA, 401(k), pension distributions. Roth distributions are NOT included - they do not count toward combined income.
Taxable interest, dividends, capital gains. Tax-exempt municipal bond interest IS included in combined income even though it is not otherwise taxable. IRC 86(b)(2).
Tax-exempt interest is added back for combined income purposes only. This is a trap many retirees miss - munis increase SS taxation even though the interest itself is not taxed. IRC 86(b)(2)(A).
Rental income, alimony (pre-2019 divorces), other ordinary income.
